colourblindmatt yet another superb Rob Lamothe album, this time augmented with even more familial talent! the normal superb vocals go without saying - surely the most emotive voice in rock ever, and a crime that it's so comparatively unheard - and also the normal poetic and insightful lyrics. As the music on the album is performed entirely by Rob and his children, there may be a tendency to assume that the performances may be slightly less than those found one 'traditional' albums, however there is absolutely no aural indication that anyone on this album is anything other than a professional musician. Totally faultless playing throughout with great feel. beautiful guitar solos, and some of the nicest sounding bass I've heard in a while.

all in all, stands amongst the best Rob Lamothe albums made - up there with 'being human' and 'steering with my knee' which are two albums rarely far from my record player / car CD player. just please don't let it be the last!!!

‘When The World Was New’ No karma, no spirit, no god. No saviour, higher power, no soul. There is no correct way, Only the path chosen. So… I loved you when the world was new, White clouds gather in the air, And when Rome burned, I burned for you, Tiny worlds in the atmosphere… Will you be the river… revealed? The sound underneath the sound? The willow, the meadow, the fawn? The rise and fall? I loved you when the world was new, White clouds gather in the air, And when Rome burned, I burned for you, Tiny worlds in the atmosphere… The rising river, Is bruising my lips. This scattered generation, So kind and empty, Blind and dead. I loved you when the world was new, White clouds gather in the air, And when Rome burned, I burned for you, Tiny worlds in the atmosphere…

‘Every Separate Thing’ First the fall, like darkness, Like a wave, breaking in the dark. Nothing floats to the surface. Beg the light… 'come soon'. Lungs on fire, but there is no air… No air rises, everything is emptiness. A hand that pushes… against nothing. Heavier than possibility. Inch by inch, breath by breath.
Mouth full of water, one, two… kick, Up to the surface, frozen grey metal.
A riddle of lines… and diamonds, Breaking through… and now it flies, Like an absence. Lighter than ever.

Every separate thing becomes lighter still, Every separate thing becomes lighter.
Twisting and rising, twisting and rising. Every separate thing, more delicate. Every separate thing, More delicate.

‘While I Await The Dawn’ She rides into the kitchen, on a Sunday afternoon. A knight in cotton armour, she… is gone too soon. She sails into the front room, makes for the shore. She claims that there is treasure here… She is the law upon this beach, A pirate princess out of reach. While i await the dawn attack, She hooks my heart behind my back. I dream she floats on fall air, heart pulling south. I’m left to watch her from the ground, she won't look down… She clears the porch and the power lines, I forgot to tell her she can't fly. She dips a wing over Sanford Street, My Amelia Earhart, out of reach…

‘Maple Syrup Festival Queen’ You and your victory dance, Back-from-the-war crazy. You are a movie star, Safe in your rituals, Luminous, forgiven. And you and I are nothing, but, Bits of ash and bone. Nothing left to send home, Desire and innocence, gone. A shadow around the eyes, We glide across the dance floor. A voice not heard, unwitnessed crimes, No body recovered… Out beyond the light, She holds her breath, So you won’t feel the warmth, That surrounds death. Oh, warmth, Oh, death. A shadow around the eyes, We glide across the dance floor. A voice not heard, unwitnessed crimes, No body recovered…

‘Song For Blair’ Never mind the breakneck speed, The cartwheels and the gravity. Pay no attention, There is nothing here to see. There will be no crime-scene photos, No sound or sign, No letter to his wife, Nothing is left behind. We can only fall, Only perfect, fall. There is not a light to go to, No angel voice. Seagulls in the distance, There is no other noise… We can only fall, Only perfect, fall. Fall, fall…

Rock, Paper, Scissors She is the end and the beginning, She is the song of the universe, She is the righteous hand… She and I, in orbit through the blue, Nothing but love is resonating, Giving and receiving… I am rock, paper, scissors. This is Nineteen Sixty-nine. And I will be sure to send a postcard, When I leave this world behind. All I can do is move in circles, Clouds and rivers and oceans, Dance across my vision… I am rock, paper, scissors. This is Nineteen Sixty-nine. And I will be sure to send a postcard, When I leave this world behind.

‘Back To The Beginning’ Summer night, whisky charm, Moaning like a low-strung guitar. We cross the border, here we are, Here we are. Sink the 8-ball, wrack my brain, A miracle, we're not insane. Long drive in the killing rain... Lungs fill with smoke, Like the breath of the devil. These stupid things, That bind me to you. Somehow we go, back to the beginning, We always do. Your name tattooed on my left arm, Lake Erie sunrise in a stolen car. And the birds… are silent. If you forgive, I will forget, Everything that happens next. Safe here, in the space Between my fingers and the frets. Lungs fill with smoke, Like the breath of the devil These stupid things, That bind me to you. Somehow we go, back to the beginning, We always do. Summer night, whisky charm, Moaning like a low-strung guitar. We cross the border, here we are… Lungs fill with smoke, like the breath of the devil These stupid things, that bind me to you. Somehow we go, back to the beginning, Lungs full of smoke, Like the breath of the devil. These stupid things, that bind me to you. Somehow we go, back to the beginning…

‘We Live The Life We Choose’ Sometimes I wonder, What the neighbours musta’ thought they saw. You dancin’ in the window, Me singing about when the world was raw… I was singin’ about when the world was raw. I was singin’ to you when the world was new. Vampires on cellphones… Yeah, we live the life we choose. I talk with fire, Take pictures with strangers, Yeah, we live the life we choose. Chorus The archangel cranks up the karaoke machine, The crack of the transistor, The endless hallelujah, Yeah, we live the life we choose. I was inside the poem, Looking out from between the words, Yeah, we live the life we choose. The crows keep on passing the word, From bird to bird, to big black bird. Yeah, we live the life we choose. Chorus Stardust… and into the world. Ashes and rust, beginning to end, to beginning, again. To beginning again…
